Success Continues for Mathematicians

Year 10 students from Dover Grammar School for Girls continued to gain national recognition when they stormed to second place in the South East Finals of the Maths Challenge. Held at Sussex University, four of the school’s most talented Mathematicians spent a gruelling three hours solving a series of problems, tasks and algebra more commonly designed for A level students. Pitted against nine other teams from top schools across the South East such as King’s Canterbury and The Judd at Tonbridge, the Dover team achieved an outstanding 174 points out of a maximum 200 and second place. For Sue Hurlow, their teacher and Headteacher Matthew Bartlett who was also attending the event, it was a tense afternoon as results are not declared until the penultimate task and then the relay event can change the whole outcome. ‘Fortunately, we have a team of four who are all really talented’ said Headteacher, Matthew Bartlett, ‘and so we are not reliant on just one strong team member. I think this is where we really triumphed against some of our competitors.’
