Having won through to the South East Final of Young Enterprise, the Dover Grammar School Girls company ‘FUNdamentools’ scooped the ‘Best Innovation’ Award for their multi sensory learning product. Based on cartoon characters created by the students and now available in DVD, internet and book format, the product is targeted at filling a real need for students with learning needs. It all started from the work Sixth Form students did with learners in other schools and units around the area and is a response to other teachers and parents who felt no suitable product was available. Presenting the awards at the South East Final, the Chairman of the judges and Director of Fidelity UK (a major UK investment fund) James Lowther commented on how the students had converted their passion and commitment for the community into a viable business and one that was giving back to the very community from which it had sprung. To reach the South East Final, the grammar school team had to beat off competition from 249 other schools in the South East region with a total of 435 companies competing. Headteacher Matthew Bartlett hailed this as a ‘remarkable achievement’.
