Key Stage 3
German is introduced to our students in Year 8 as their second modern foreign language. The accelerated course allows students to attain the same level as in French by the end of Year 9.
Key Stage 4
Students at GCSE study the WJEC course. The course aims to test how well candidates could communicate in a German speaking country. All examination tasks are set in authentic situations which they might encounter. They take examinations in Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing.
At A Level, the students study the Edexcel course. Students cover literary, historical and cultural topics, simultaneously developing complex grammatical structures and extending their higher register vocabulary. In addition to the timetabled lessons in small teaching groups, A level students benefit from individual weekly speaking sessions with the Foreign Language Assistant.
Trips are organised to support learning across the Key Stages. Students benefit from our well established contact with the Ursulinenschule, a girls’ grammar school in Cologne. Year 10 have the opportunity to take part in an exchange (see German exchange under extra curriculum tab for photos).
A level students visit the Goethe Institute in London to research their chosen topics for the examinations. They also spend a day at the BFI in London to study German film.
