The Business Studies Department offers GCSE Business and Economics as an option in Year 10. This qualification is validated by Edexcel. In this subject, pupils study three units; Introduction to Small Business, Investigating Small Business and Introduction to Economic Understanding.
Study of this subject compliments Enterprise and Work Related Learning and adds depth to many of the topics studied in PSHE and Citizenship such as entrepreneurship and sustainable development.
High achievers in Year 10 have the opportunity to study the AS Level at the same time as the GCSE. This is the fourth year that there has been this opportunity and students have achieved good grades to date.
At AS and A2 Level, the pupils study the Edexcel Business and Economics specification , looking in greater depth at the business and economic theory underlying what is happening in the world of work. The students develop higher level skills of applying knowledge in context, analysing and evaluating information and drawing conclusions. There are four units in the A2, all assessed by external examination.
Every other year, we visit a European city to enhance the study of Business. This year, we will be visiting Barcelona and took part in trips to the SEAT car factory, the Torres vineyard and Port Aventura.
Young Enterprise has been run very successfully at the school for a number of years. This year, the school’s company Fundamentools won the Dover Area Final, the Kent Final and were most innovative company in the South East.
In Year 8, we run a week long Manufacturing and Marketing project. During the week, pupils design, make and sell a product, as well as preparing a pitch to present to the DGGS dragons! The best team wins a prize and proceeds from the sales are given to a charity chosen by the students.
Girls studying Business and Economics both at GCSE and above achieve well especially in terms of added value and many move onto Business courses at university or to careers in Management. The students benefit from a fully equipped computer suite as the base room and a wide variety of resources, both ICT and paper based. The Subject Leader acts as an A Level Examiner for Edexcel and this provides insight into what is required for high achievement. Both members of the department hold Masters level qualifications in Business.
